Seeking Director and Music Director for Spring 2021 College Virtual Production of The Magic Flute
Penn Singers Light Opera Company
Philadelphia, PA 19104
Penn Singers Light Opera Company, the University of Pennsylvania’s premier student-run musical theatre company, is seeking a non-union Director and Music Director for its Spring 2021 production of The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte, 1791). Due to the length and complexity of this show, we are internally making edits to the original libretto to better fit this production to a virtual medium. That said, we are open to any and all visions this show may inspire!
Due to circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and the implications it has on University life and student activities, there are a series of unknowns surrounding this production that are subject to change based on University guidelines. The production itself will most likely occur through a streaming format sometime in later March or April. The auditions and callbacks for this production, as well as most of the rehearsal and production process, will likely be conducted remotely.
Penn Singers regularly rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. EST and Sundays from 12:00-5:00 p.m EST. If, though unlikely, there was a scenario in which in-person rehearsals were to be permitted, rehearsals occuring in person would use appropriate social distancing and cleaning measures and would be located on Penn’s campus in Philadelphia, PA.
Our ideal Director candidate is immensely flexible and prepared for a dynamic, collaborative environment. These qualities are especially important as our Director will be working closely with student actors, musicians, crew, and designers throughout the creative process. We are looking for a Director with a clear vision, who is passionate about ensemble work. Also, our ideal Director candidate has innovative ideas about adapting the production process to a virtual medium. Experience with directing virtual productions, or skills that apply in a virtual medium, such as storyboarding, green screen usage, etc., are a plus but not required.
Our ideal Music Director candidate is skilled at piano and is also overall immensely flexible, patient, and dedicated to working well with people of diverse musical abilities. Experience working with college-aged performers is a plus. Additionally, our ideal candidate has experience with sound mixing both vocal and orchestral parts and experience with the software necessary to do so.
Our mission statement is the following: Penn Singers Light Opera Company is a four-year musical theatre company based at the University of Pennsylvania that values inclusivity of all genders, races, sexual orientations, and identities. We are a community of performers, musicians, and theatre technicians that is committed to producing professional-level musical theatre in a fun, welcoming, and social environment.
Additionally, Singers is committed to anti-racist practices and we believe the Directors are an integral part of this effort. We expect Directors to perform their duties, from auditions to casting to rehearsals, with a goal of achieving a safe and equitable environment for all company members, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, ability, or identity.
Director and Music Director contracts begin on the first day of rehearsal (TBD, likely late January) and will be completed upon our closing performance (TBD, likely late March-April). Salary for each position is a flat stipend of $2500. Housing and transportation are not provided. If an in-person scenario occurs and our hired Directors are located outside of Philadelphia, they are responsible for bearing any costs related to accommodations, travel, etc.
To apply: All applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, and three references to [email protected]. Director applicants should additionally send a proposal for The Magic Flute, which includes how this show would be adapted for a virtual production. All applications are due by Wednesday, January 6th at 11:59 P.M EST.
