Seeking Multi-hyphenate Artists: Audition for Hedgepig Ensemble

Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre

Job Details

Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre is seeking new ensemble members to join the company in January 2021. We are particularly interested in multi-hyphenated artists – actors, directors, designers, stage managers, producers – to take part in performance, production, and leadership roles within the ensemble.

Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre is a community of theatre artists who train, work, and create together. We love the classics, and we care deeply about gender parity, diversity, and including historically excluded voices.

Our cornerstone program, Expand the Canon (, is a call to action for classical and regional theatres to honor a diverse set of women playwrights in the classical canon, claiming space for a plurality of voices alongside Shakespeare, Chekhov, Wilde, Wilson, and others. Our mission is to elevate the voices of women* by reimagining the classics. *We define women as anyone who identifies as a woman some or all of the time.

Our 2021 season will center on creating and celebrating additions to the list and developing a new play based on our Expand the Canon research. Ensemble involvement will include developmental workshops, a devised theatrical event, reading plays for Expand the Canon, an artistic retreat, and a holiday production. We offer project-based stipends from $150-500 based on the scope of the project. We have roles to fill, including leadership roles, that span a range of acting types and artistic backgrounds.

Hedgepig is committed to actively dismantling systems of oppression and racism in every aspect of our organization and practice by bringing in mandatory anti-racist/anti-bias training at least once per year, establishing an anti-racism accountability group, working with an intimacy coordinator at the top of each season to establish boundaries and consent-based practices, and maintaining an anonymous portal for artists to safely air any concern.

Hedgepig would like to encourage applications from people of the Global Majority, as well as artists of all or no genders, sexualities, abilities, ideologies, body sizes, and ages.

We are especially seeking:

   – Actors who identify as multi-hyphenate artists

   – Women 40+ and Men 50+ who enjoy devising and working with heightened language

   – Artists who are excited by our mission as well as the chance to grow roots and expand their abilities

   – Black or Global Majority teaching artists to lead professional development programming for adults – we want the teachers of our program, aimed at Corporations, to illustrate the diversity that we want to see within these institutions

   – Artists interested in leadership roles within an ensemble company

   – Designers, stage managers, directors and producers interested in working in an ensemble setting
