Job Details

DESCRIPTION

Hamlet Isn’t Dead (HID), NYC’s 237th-best Shakespeare company is seeking a non-union director for the next installment of our Contemporaries of Color series, which explores classical authors of color to diversify what is traditionally considered ‘classical theatre’.

This piece will be devised from the Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral by Phyllis Wheatley. The director will have a hand in the development, creation, and casting process. In collaboration with HID’s creative team, the Special Programming Coordinator, and their own resources, they will create a 60-90 minute performance piece showcasing these incredibly important pieces of literature. The performance over Zoom will be in late January.

Timeline:

  • Development of concept: Nov. 20th – Dec 7th

  • Casting process to begin on Dec. 11th

  • Performances to be held on Jan. 29th & 30th

Ideal Candidates

  • Experience in directing and/or participating in the devised performance process

  • BIPOC

  • Experience producing readings and/or performance pieces over Zoom

  • Collaborative spirit

Due to the virtual nature of this programming, candidates do not need to be NYC-based. Because of the unusual landscape in which the performing arts find themselves, a strong connection to these texts is the most significant attribute to a potential director. Please don’t let a lack of experience in the medium deter you from applying. The collection of poems can be found here: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/409/409-h/409-h.htm

Compensation

  • $150 stipend
