Dyson College of Arts and Sciences at Pace University invites applications for an Assistant Dean for Diversity and Equity in the Arts with a commitment to Pace’s motto of Opportunitas and a passion for promoting diversity and equity in education and the arts. This is a grant-supported one-year appointment funded by The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations, with the possibility of renewal. The Assistant Dean for Diversity and Equity in the Arts will have varied responsibilities, including administrative oversight of a new BA in Writing for Diversity and Equity in Theater and Media Arts, an interdisciplinary major scheduled to launch in January 2021; supervision of the Pace Storytelling for Equity and Inclusion Fellowship program, as well as of its Program Coordinator; fundraising for diversity in the arts at Pace in collaboration with Pace’s president; supervision of new diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts grant opportunities that arise; and other such activities. The position may include some teaching.
The new Writing for Diversity and Equity in Theater and Media program is dedicated to training a new generation of writers that embraces diversity and intersectionality through a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree program. With a commitment to social justice and the call for more inclusive and representative content creation, the Writing for Diversity and Equity in Theater and Media program will actively recruit diverse writers of all backgrounds committed to expanding our collective cultural narrative. Students in the program will be exposed to a wide array of narrative platforms including theater, film, television, gaming and animation. Students will also study the history of under-represented groups and racial diversity in the United States, and the pursuit of equity and diversity in the entertainment industry.
The Pace Storytelling for Equity and Inclusion Fellowship, funded by the Mellon Foundation and launched in Spring 2020, offers students from historically underrepresented communities pre-professional experiences as a pathway to meaningful careers through internship, mentoring, and networking opportunities. Through the program, students gain the experience needed to become leaders and change agents for diversity and equity in the entertainment industry.
The ideal candidate will have a BA or higher degree in the liberal arts; 5+ years of administrative experience in arts organizations or in higher education (including fundraising) in areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and 5+ years of experience as a professional writer in theater and/or film and media, with an interest in social justice. Experience teaching Playwriting and/or Screenwriting at the college level is a plus. Pace is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community.
