  • The Random Farms Kids’ Theater is a not-for-profit organization that offers musical theater programming to young people from kindergarten through college. The company was founded in 1995 and currently serves approximately 1,200 young people each year with an annual operating budget of $1.7 million. Random Farms operates primarily in Westchester County, NY, though many of its participants travel from nearby counties in NY as well as CT and NJ.  There are currently 15 full-time employees, plus several part-time employees and independent contractors.  

     Random Farms is seeking a full-time Artistic Director to join its executive team, alongside the CEO and Managing Director. They will lead and support the artistic staff, acting as their voice when liaising between programming, admin, and the board.  We are seeking someone with exceptional knowledge of children’s musical theater production and the ability to diplomatically manage people with diverse viewpoints.  The ideal candidate will lead with artistic vision, stay within budget, while also supporting and listening to staff, students, and parents.  They have a positive attitude, never-ending patience, the ability to pivot gracefully under pressure, and an ego they’re willing to check at the door.


    Program Oversight


    Reach out to venues to schedule and confirm all tech and dress rehearsals and performances for all programs

  • Based on confirmed dates at venue, work with Production Manager and programming staff to create full rehearsal schedules for all programs

  • Work with programming staff to confirm staffing for each program, including a Teaching Schedule By Day, which lists every day of the year and who is teaching what, at what time, on each day

  • Work with programming staff to determine schedule for all private voice lessons, including which teachers teach on what day, and ensuring there is studio space available

  • Create build sheets for Data and Registration Manager and Marketing Manager sothey can transfer information to website and registration forms

  • Make sure programming staff stays within budget 

  • Teach classes or special workshops as needed

  • Occasionally oversee creation of commissioned musicals

  • Attending Rehearsals / Performances

  • Attend last three sessions of all Jellybeans and Workshop programs and give notes to creative staff

  • Be available to attend and provide necessary support for all tech and dress rehearsals for Mainstage and Edge programs, including load-in and load-out. 

  • Attend all voice recitals

  • Attend as many Workshop, Jellybean, Mainstage, and Edge performances as schedule permits to provide support for staff and students and Facetime with parents

  • Attend Kids for a Cause performances at least once per season (twice a year).       

  • Directing and Choreographing

    Serve as a resource and guide for programming staff members when it comes to assisting with choreography or making directorial decisions

  • Direct and or choreograph 1-2 productions per year if necessary and/or if time and workload allows

  • Occasionally fill in for directors during Workshop (grades 3-8) and Jellybeans (grades K-2) rehearsals to cover any staffing gaps, check on the progress of programs, and have Facetime with students

  • HR

    Recruit, interview, and hire all artistic/programming full-time and part-time staff 

  • Recruit, interview, and hire all artistic contractors for individual productions and projects

  • Oversee scheduling of all programming staff to ensure a balanced distribution of workload

  • Work with executive team to handle termination of employees and contractors when necessary

  • Supervise and manage programming staff

  • Work with Managing Director to ensure that communication between admin staff and programming staff is open and transparent

  • Help to create a supportive, positive culture amongst staff, students, and families

  • Registration

    Work with Managing Director to determine all registration opening dates, including priority registration dates, scholarship deadlines, and scholarship announcement dates for all programs

  • Confirm all rehearsal dates, performance dates, class dates, program and class descriptions, and pricing information and send to Data and Registration Manager for registration building and to Marketing Manager for website and marketing

  • Proof all registration forms before they are made live

  • Update Standard Agreements and Participation Policies for each program as needed and make sure website and registrations include most up to date policies

  • Strategic Planning

    Work with staff, board, and committees to develop, restructure, or cut programs as needed

  • Work with executive team to create annual budget

  • Meet quarterly with administrative team to reconcile income and expenses against budget projections

  • Work with programming staff to determine show titles for every program

  • Work with programming staff to determine classes and lessons each season

  • Work with executive team to explore new venue options and potential rehearsal space as needed

  • Work with executive team to explore potential community partnerships and outreach opportunities

  • Parent / Student Relations

    Student Recommendations

  • Write college and program recommendations for students as requested

  • New Parent Interest

  • Answer phone calls and emails from potential new parents and participants Explain programs in detail

  • Coordinate with senior directors to allow potential new parents and students to come observe a rehearsal

  • Parent / Student Issues

  • Step in if parents are unhappy with a situation or if a staff member is having difficulty with a parent or student. Most common issues are sensitivity around casting or if a child needs to be removed from a program for too many absences or behavior issues.

  • Student Recruitment

  • When registration numbers are low for any one program, reach out to past students, showcase participants, or young people in the community, and attempt to recruit

  • Fundraising

    Assist CEO and Outreach Director with donor prospect research

  • Attend Special Events Committee meetings to assist with Gala and all fundraising events. Gala duties include (but not limited to): writing and delivering student award speeches, collecting video footage or photos of any award recipients, and performing

  • Work with CEO and Managing Director to explore new fundraising opportunities



Minimum 5 years children’s musical theater experience.  Applicants with experience as an Artistic Director or similar position in production management preferred.  Familiarity with cloud-based office management systems required.  Must have impeccable written and verbal communication skills.


Start Date:  September
Salary: $63,000 – $68,000 (commensurate with experience)
Benefits: Health insurance (partially paid by employer), 401k, paid time off (vacation, sick, personal); partially flexible remote-work options.
Schedule: Some evenings and weekends will be required for attending rehearsals / performances and meetings.
Location: The company’s rehearsal studio is in Elmsford, NY.  Performances and special events at various venues in Westchester County, NY.
