Fellowships and internships at SPACE on Ryder Farm offer aspiring artistic administrators and chefs an immersive and impactful experience, equipping participants with sought-after skills to aid in their transition into the professional arena. SPACE Fellows and Interns learn about the inner workings of a robust and unique nonprofit organization by working alongside SPACE’s growing staff. In addition to practical training and mentorship from senior staff members, fellows and interns benefit from the one-of-a-kind opportunity afforded at SPACE to connect with artists and leading arts and theatre administrators from around the country. Many former interns and fellows have successfully leveraged these connections to secure employment and opportunities in New York City and beyond.
SPACE selects six interns and three fellows each year to live and work on Ryder Farm, an idyllic 225-year-old working organic farm in Brewster, New York. Internships are approximately six to eight weeks in duration. Fellowships are approximately 13 weeks in duration. The first flight of interns will be on the farm from Tuesday, May 26th to Sunday, June 28th, and the second flight will be on the farm Monday, July 6th to Sunday, August 23rd. The fellows will be on the farm from Sunday, August 23rd to Sunday, November 22nd, 2020 (dates subject to change). All interns and fellows are provided communal living spaces and most meals. The fellows are also paid the prevailing minimum wage for Putnam County.
The Culinary Fellow/Intern will work closely with the Food Program Coordinator and SPACE’s resident chefs to help prepare and serve the signature three farm-fresh meals daily for the residency programs. They will serve as the sous chef to the Resident Chef each residency week and help manage kitchen clean-up after each meal. Occasional menu planning, grocery shopping, supporting deliveries between the farm and the kitchen and maintaining tea and coffee service is required. Additionally, they will assist the Food Program Coordinator in research efforts, including identifying and testing wholesale vendors. This fellowship/internship requires a healthy amount of rigor, early mornings and standing for 2-3 hours at a time.Those interested in a career in the culinary or hospitality fields are encouraged to apply for this position. SPACE offers one fellowship/internship per flight.
In addition to their specialized responsibilities, SPACE fellows and interns will work collaboratively as a cohort to perform daily tasks including setting up for and cleaning up after resident meals, maintaining pristine physical spaces for residents and picking up residents and guests from the Brewster train station.
Additionally, the cohort of fellows will collaborate on a capstone project to identify an internal problem facing SPACE and work together to propose and execute a solution to the problem during the course of their fellowship.

Applicants can apply for more than one concentration and both the fellowship and the internship, but only need to fill out one application. Applicant interviews will be conducted in March or April 2020, and all applicants will be notified of their status no later than late April 2020.
