New York City Center is committed to training the next generation of creative, passionate arts professionals by building pathways to careers in the arts for candidates from underrepresented communities.
Emerging artists are immersed in the fast-paced production process of Encores! or Encores! Off-Center. Apprenticeships are available for Costume Design, Directing, Lighting Design, Music Direction, Scenic Design, and Sound Design. The program includes pre-production and paid training. Apprentices are compensated $15 per hour. Schedules vary by department and production schedule.
- Through these programs, apprentices will: Work directly with a mentor in their area of focus.
- Engage with City Center staff and artists.

- Deliver a final presentation to City Center staff.
- Highly qualified program candidates will possess: A compelling connection to the program’s mission and purpose

- Strong communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to take direction and work both independently and collaboratively
- Flexible availability that includes some nights and weekends

SUMMER CREATIVE APPRENTICESHIPS
In conjunction with the 2020 Encores! Off-Center season, City Center’s Summer Creative Apprenticeship Program is accepting applications for students and early-career individuals to apprentice in Costume Design, Directing, Lighting Design, Music Direction, Scenic Design, and Sound Design.
The program runs from late May to late July, including paid training. Apprentices have a bank of 240 hours to work on three productions, setting a weekly schedule with their respective department. Flexible availability during this time is required, including nights and weekends.
Apprentices are compensated $15 per hour for 240 hours over 8 weeks, totaling $3,600.
Available Positions (one per department)
Directing: The directing apprentice works closely with the director and associate of each Off-Center production. They will attend all rehearsals and be present for production meetings and tech. The directing apprentice will provide note-taking support, may be asked to run lines with actors, or stand in for actors who are not present while blocking is being reviewed. The apprentice will gain an intimate look into how a director synthesizes dynamics between all creative departments and manages time within a truncated rehearsal process.
Costume Design: The costume design apprentice works closely with the costume designer and assistant costume designer, assisting with research, shopping and returns, costumes rentals, fittings, and coordinating with stage management. The apprentice will take notes during rehearsals and attend dress rehearsals. Duties may also include receipt collection and reconciliation, documentation of fitting photos, and maintaining all costume paperwork.
Lighting Design: The lighting apprentice works closely with the lighting designer and assistant lighting designer during the tech process for three Encores! Off-Center productions. Through this program, the lighting apprentice gains insight into the lighting design, and the technical and archiving process of a fast-paced musical theater festival. Specific responsibilities include working with the assistant lighting designer to create and maintain lighting paperwork and archives for each production, provide day to day onsite support for the lighting team, as well as organizational and administrative support.
Music Directing: The music directing apprentice works closely with the Off-Center music director and the music directors of each individual production. The Apprentice will attend meetings with the creative team, orchestra rehearsals, cast rehearsals, the sitzprobe, and tech throughout the production process. The apprentice will also observe and participate in the music preparation process. In this position, the apprentice will gain an understanding of how a music department functions within a theater festival and gain hands-on experience in the craft of music direction.
Scenic Design: The scenic design apprentice works closely with the scenic designer and the assistant scenic designer in support of Encores! Off-Center productions. Through this program, the scenic apprentice gains insight into the scenic design process of a fast-paced musical theater festival. Specific responsibilities include working with the assistant scenic designer to create and maintain scenic paperwork and archives for each production, provide day to day onsite support for the scenic team, as well as organizational and administrative support.
Sound Design: The sound design apprentice works closely with the sound designer and assistant sound designer in support of Encores! Off-Center productions. Through this program, the sound apprentice gains insight into the sound design process in a fast-paced musical theater festival. Specific responsibilities include working with the assistant sound designer to create and maintain sound paperwork and archives for each production, provide day to day onsite support for the sound team, as well as organizational and administrative support.
Specific positions are determined through an application and interview process for selected candidates that meet the program requirements.
