PRESENT PERFECT – A young Hasidic woman steps outside the confines of her Brooklyn community and finds herself as much an immigrant in a new land as the recently arrived students she teaches in her New York adult English class. Lives intertwine as each in their own way struggles to belong, find love, and succeed in a new country. Present Perfect is a uniquely American story told with a contemporary twist, infectious vitality, and a Latin beat.
Javier Supa (Javi): Male (Lead) 28 – 37 vocal range: Tenor A2 – A4; A young Peruvian father in his early thirties is optimistic about his new life in the US though he struggles to maintain his integrity and his relationship with his son who remained in Peru. Instead, chaos in the form of a natural earthquake and an emotional one leaves him struggling with difficult choices that affect his legal status and a budding romance. Has some Spanish dialogue. Student in class. Ethnicity: Latino / Hispanic
Sarah Chana Aberman: Female (Lead) 25 – 32 vocal range: Soprano A3 – A5; A young Hasidic Jewish woman has one foot in, one foot out of her sheltered Hasidic community in Brooklyn and finds herself as much an immigrant in a new world as her students she is teaching. Trying to find her footing, her life intertwines with her students personally and professionally. Has some lines in Hebrew, Yiddish. Teacher in class. Ethnicity: Middle Eastern, White / European Descent
Kiko Female (Supporting) 18 – 28 vocal range: Mezzo Belter A3 – E5; a Japanese woman in her early twenties arrives in the US with hopes of a career on Broadway. Her enthusiasm is not dampened by repeated setbacks and frustrations with the language and limited roles for Asian actors. Has some lines in Japanese. Student in class. Ethnicity: Japanese/Asian
Tariq Male (Supporting) 18 – 28 vocal range: Tenor Tenor A2 – G4; A young Syrian gay man in his early twenties has aspirations to be a rap star. He is alienated from his family and his culture because of his choices. He works tirelessly to bring his lover safely to the US. His common Arabic name causes dire problems. Has some lines in Arabic. Student in class. Ethnicity: Middle Eastern
Gloria Female (Supporting) 40 – 50 vocal range: Mezzo G3 – F5; a Dominican woman in her forties, a young grandmother; inventive in finding ways to support her family after her husband becomes ill, and she becomes the breadwinner. She becomes a confidante and comfort to many in the classroom including the teacher. Has some Spanish dialogue. Student in class. Ethnicity: Latino / Hispanic
Ossie Male (Supporting) 20 – 30 vocal range: Tenor C3 – C5 Falsetto; young man in his early twenties provides an irreverence and humor which energizes the classroom. A doctor in Cuba, he now is starting as an orderly in a hospital, studying to be a phlebotomist, and provides medical attention to the students in the class. Ossie is dark skinned and navigates a new understanding of race in the US. Has some Spanish dialogue. Student in class. Ethnicity: Afro-Latino/Latino/Hispanic
Diego Male (Supporting) 30 – 39 vocal range: Baritenor A2 – A4; a Mexican man in his middle thirties comes to the US without papers; his own desires are placed second as he helps his girlfriend Teresa get papers to bring her teenage daughter from Mexico where gangs threaten her safety. (actor also plays Sarah’s Father.) Has Spanish dialogue. Student in class. Ethnicity: Latino /Hispanic
Teresa: Female (Supporting) 28 – 39 vocal range: Alto Belter E3 – D5; a Mexican woman in her early thirties makes the hard choice to leave her daughter in Mexico and come to the US so that she could ultimately provide for her daughter and bring her here; as she watches helplessly from a distance, their relationship deteriorates. Has some dialogue in Spanish. Student in class. Ethnicity: Latino /Hispanic
Zuhkra Female (Supporting) 45 – 60 vocal range: Mezzo Belter G3 – F5; a middle-aged journalist from a former Soviet republic (Uzbekistan) must leave her native country because of political pressure, and she fights to get asylum here; she resents her low status in the US: “putting down the pen to pick up a broom”; her intensity and impatience alienates her from her mainly Spanish speaking co-students until tragedy strikes a classmate. (actor also plays Sarah’s Mom). Has some lines in Uzbek. Student in class. Ethnicity: Ethnically Ambiguous / Multiracial, Middle Eastern, White / European Descent
