Equity actors for 4 roles: Zhang Lin, Zhang Wei, young Zhang Lin, Benny.

All roles are Chinese Men.


Zhang Lin : Chinese man, 40s to 50s, might look a little older, life has been difficult. Must be able to speak a little Mandarin. Hope to cast someone able to speak both unaccented English and accented English. He’s a thoughtful, courageous, deeply Chinese man living with lifelong pain and awareness of life’s ironies and complexities. It’s the present in Beijing.

Zhang Wei : Chinese man, 40s to early 50s. Zhang Lin’s brother who’s done better, a factory boss who has obeyed government rules more easily. Proud of his son who’s going to Harvard. Must be able to speak a little Mandarin. Hope to cast someone able to speak both unaccented English and accented English. It’s the present in Beijing.

Young Zhang Lin : Chinese man, 20s. It’s 1989 Beijing. Idealistic, wildly in love with his young wife. Sees a new world coming, but is smart enough to be careful. Best for actor to speak unaccented English. (Actor may double with BENNY)

Benny : Chinese man, 20s. Zhang Wei’s son. Deeply Chinese yet enthusiastically in love with all things Western. Needs to speak a little Mandarin and best if actor speaks heavily accented English. (Actor may double with YOUNG ZHANG LIN)

Those wishing to read for the two younger roles should be prepared to read both YOUNG ZHANG LIN and BENNY sides. (actor may double). Those wising to read for either of the two older roles should also be prepared to read both ZHANG LIN and ZHANG WEI sides, though these roles will not be doubled. Bring picture and resume.

Minors must be accompanied by an adult
