Susan I. Weinstein

Job Details

Seeking Actors for a new play, by Susan I. Weinstein.

Ether: The Strange Afterlife of Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

ETHER is a play within a play, a story told with the aid of projections, puppetry, automata and stage magic. Doyle and Houdini’s afterlife is a continuation of a passionate personal war about the nature of life and death. Yet their worlds are contained within the afterlife–our present in abstracted media. Their wives, Bess and Lady Doyle, are aware of this, yet tethered to their husband’s worlds. They join forces to resolve the bitter conflict so all can  move on. The journey starts with the origins of  Houdini’s persona, his escapes and Doyle’s vocation and revelations. Together they investigate mediums, famous and infamous; Mr. Powell, Margery, Eva C and even Lady Doyle. Each instance they emerge with dramatically opposite narratives.  As evidence mounts up. Subjective and objective truths erupt in a transcendent resolution.

The first round of auditions will be held on October 22nd, 2019 between 3-5 PM however if you are viewing this listing after the 22nd, we strongly encourage you to apply anyway. The roles of Bess and Lady Doyle have been cast, we are only looking for the male leads at this time.

Harry Houdini

Well-built, intense athletic. His expression is vigilent, a man who doesn’t miss a trick. Determined to disprove mediums and their connection to the spirit world. Ever a showman, he takes pride in defying the impossible. Interest/experience in magic tricks, sleight of hand, a plus. Should be comfortable with being trained in simple stage Illusions.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

A large yet complacent man. He is a country doctor and an author. His constant search to connect the real world with the psychic world of spirit often leaves him psychologically tormented. Disciplined and constrained.

The show will rehearse weekdays in lower Manhattan, starting Nov 19th, from 6:30-9pm

Performance Dates:

December 19-22nd at the IRT theatre.

November 19, 2019 – December 22, 2019
