Under the leadership of Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director Diane Paulus and Executive Producer Diane Borger, the American Repertory Theater is poised to raise significant funds to support the vision of the Artistic Director and the A.R.T.’s productions, while enhancing the cultural climate of the community, and creating a model for American theaters. With this visibility and energy, the Assistant Director, Events and Partnerships will join a Development Department that is designed to capitalize on an evolving model of arts philanthropy.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer and Director of Individual Giving, the Assistant Director, Events and Partnerships is an integral member of an evolving development team charged with raising over $5.2M in annual contributed support for the theater. The Assistant Director, Events and Partnerships will primarily strategize, plan, and manage approximately 40 donor events and engagement experiences each season, including Opening Nights, Closing Toasts, technical rehearsals, cast meet-and-greets, conversations with artists, and more. This role also participates in creating and implementing strategies that will enable the A.R.T. to aggressively increase its base of contributed support by creating curated experiences and opportunities for donors and prospects. This is a unique opportunity to utilize skills fundamental to successful non-profit fundraising and arts administration, while contributing to the day-to-day functions of a professional theater’s development department.
The Assistant Director, Events and Partnerships is charged with the logistical and strategic planning of the A.R.T.’s annual gala, the theater’s largest fundraising event of the season, which engages nearly 600 attendees and raises over $1.4M for A.R.T.’s artistic and educational programming. By involving key stakeholders, working with departments across the organization, and creating new and innovative fundraising strategies, the Assistant Director, Events and Partnerships serves a vital role in ensuring the event’s success.
The Assistant Director, Events and Partnerships will also assist with corporate giving as needed and where appropriate, working with the CDO and senior leadership to identify, research, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate donors and prospects. Specifically, this role will involve serving as a corporate donor liaison for the theater and creating mutually beneficial recognition and engagement opportunities.
The Assistant Director, Events and Partnerships will prepare or organize all necessary solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship materials related to major gifts, special events, and corporate sponsors, including drafting briefing memos for senior leadership, drafting personal donor correspondence for senior leadership, writing proposals, and crafting printed and digital collateral.
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
Bachelor’s Degree and three years of experience in fundraising and large events logistical and strategic planning.
Self-starter with ability to problem-solve efficiently and effectively. Excellent written and verbal skills. Solid organizational and time management skills with a strong attention to detail. Team player with outstanding interpersonal skills – ability to work with a diverse group of volunteers and staff in a collaborative manner. Ability to manage donors and prospects with a high level of attention and discretion. A solid understanding of fundraising databases as well as overall computer literacy is required. Interest or experience in the arts is highly desirable.
Ability to work in an office setting. Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends required.
