Seeking:

DEGAS/ED (LEAD ROLE Male, Age 25-35 Character may be any ethnicity)Excellent and Versatile Character Actor who Sings will play Two Roles:

EDVARD DEGAS — A great artist who, tragically, due to losing his sight, is now running out of time; thus his frustration can seem gruff, but underneath it all, he is really just a lost soul. Born into a wealthy family, and of Society, he has been featured in the Parisian Salons of the day, during a time when Paris is booming with art. A Misogynist, even a bit of a villain at times, he stops at nothing to get what he wants. No Accent, but a facility to nuance some speech will be helpful as some French is spoken in the play — also, DEGAS and ED’s vocal qualities need to be slightly different.

as well as

ED – Appears to be a typical regional Museum Security Guard in his blue uniform jacket, though as he leads us through the story (often breaking the fourth wall and addressing the audience directly), we discover his unique blue collar charm. Warm, even cheery, he loves his job. He knows everything about every piece of art in the room, and is particularly enamored of the sculpture of Marie and the story behind it…

Vocally: BARITONE (Eb3 – Eb/F4)

MAMA/BALLET MISTRESS (LEAD ROLE Female, Age 25-35 Character may be any ethnicity)Excellent and Versatile, Seasoned Actress who Sings will play Two Roles:

MAMA — a hard working laundress, struggling to make ends meet and they never do. She is devoted to Marie and her family, and will do anything for her daughter. In a Blue Collar life, she maintains a positive outlook as she copes with the hardship of taking care of her father who has fallen gravely ill and a husband who is nowhere to be found. Gracious and Loving, the Soul of Mother Earth, she toils to keep her family fed, and her child in dance classes, working tirelessly to safeguard for her young daughter a life better than what she has now, and ensure that she will be able to get out of the predicament into which she was born.

as well as

BALLET MISTRESS — A seasoned teacher at the Paris Opera. Strict and somewhat uptight, she is all business but very supportive of Marie’s talent. She has a job to do and does it meticulously well — like Mdme Giry in Phantom of the Opera, she observes, corrects, and makes things happen up to her personal standard of excellence. No Accent, but a facility to nuance some speech will be helpful as some French is spoken in the play — also, MAMA and the BALLET MISTRESS’ vocal qualities need to be slightly different.

Vocally: SOPRANO  (D4 – A5)

Seeking :

MARIE VAN GOETHEM – (LEAD ROLE Female, Plays Age 14: Actress may in fact be either 14 to 17, or Legally 18 or slightly older, as long as she can believably play 14 years old. Character may be any ethnicity) DANCER — MUST HAVE A BALLET BACKGROUND — Must also Sing well to carry Solos and Act well enough to carry a Lead Role. Dancing is her life! She is a dreamer, yet knows what she wants and how to get it. Very Likeable, yet Strong and Courageous — Nobody pushes her around, especially Degas who can be unreasonably demanding. She is a good girl who stands up for herself, but she does it with respect and gentleness. She is very protective of her mother, and rises to the occasion when her family finds itself in dire financial straits. Kind, Empathetic, Smart, Bright – there is a Light about her. She will do anything and everything for her family, and stop at nothing to succeed. She ultimately becomes the model for Degas’ “La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze,” but in today’s world her legacy might be akin to the “Fearless Girl Statue” which faces the Brass Bull on Wall Street. (No Accent)  Vocally: ALTO with a high range (A3 – E5)

CHARLOTTE (PRINCIPAL ROLE Female, Plays Age 16: Actress may in fact be either 15 to 17, or Legally 18 or slightly older, as long as she can believably play 16 years old. Character may be any ethnicity) Must be a Good Dancer, though she may occasionally be a bit clumsy. Quirky; She sometimes feels an outsider. A young and energetic ballet dancer, she often says the wrong thing, as she is so brazen that almost everything out of her mouth comes out wrong. She is MARIE’s friend, though she comes from Society and is now a bit established in the Paris Ballet World, so there is initially a bit of “Who is this new girl?”and “Who does she think she is?”which gives way to a desire to look out for and protect her. Also plays a BOY, a HORSE and a MUSEUM WORKER.  Vocally: MEZZO (C4 – G#5)

LOUISE (PRINCIPAL ROLE Female, Plays Age 16: Actress may in fact be either 15 to 17, or Legally 18 or slightly older, as long as she can believably play 16 years old. Character may be any ethnicity) Must be a Strong Dancer. A young dancer friend of MARIE’s who always says and does the right thing, she is a bit more naive than her friends, but always tries to make peace. She is the Nurturer, the Fixer. A bit more of a Follower, she does not like confrontation. Also plays a BOY, a HORSE, and a MUSEUM WORKER. Vocally: MEZZO (A3 – E4)

CHARLIE (PRINCIPAL ROLE Male, Plays Age 16: Actor may in fact be either 15 to 17, or Legally 18 or slightly older, as long as he can believably play 16 years old. Also plays a GIRL, a HORSE and a MUSEUM WORKER. Vocally: TENOR (C3 – G#4)

LOUIS (PRINCIPAL ROLE Male, Plays Age 16: Actor may in fact be either 15 to 17, or Legally 18 or slightly older, as long as he can believably play 16 years old. Character may be any ethnicity) Must be a Strong Dancer. A young dancer friend of MARIE’s who always says and does the right thing, he is a bit more naive than his friends, but always tries to make peace. He is the Mediator, the Fixer.
