BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas—engaging both global and local communities with world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more.  

BAM Visual Art curates and produces exhibitions, talks, and special events, in collaboration with institution-wide programs. The Visual Art department is seeking Gallery Attendants who will directly support the department and The Rudin Family Gallery. The position plays a key role in providing customer service and support for BAM’s first dedicated street-facing visual art exhibition space.

This position is part time, 12-25 hrs/week. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12pm – 6pm. Occasional additional weekday shifts, evening shifts, openings and events may be required.


  • Greet visitors, answer questions and provide information
  • Provide visitors with key points about the exhibition that is on-view and BAM’s visual art program overall
  • Monitor artwork for security and damage during on-view hours
  • Restock brochures and checklists
  • Conduct opening and closing procedures, including inspecting the gallery and surrounding areas for safety concerns prior to opening the gallery to the public
  • Open the gallery and prepare for visitors each day and close the gallery at the end of standard daily exhibition hours
  • Deliver excellent customer service in a responsive manner to ensure easy and safe entrance and exit for visitors
  • Provide comprehensive information about the BAM Strong, and other general questions about BAM as they come up
  • Track and record the number of visitors who attend the gallery each day
  • Report issues and/or safety concerns to the supervisor
  • Track and record the number of visitors who attend the gallery each day
  • Work with staff of other departments for special events or functions
  • Assist with some administrative tasks as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least six months’ customer service experience 
  • Comfortable discussing and explaining contemporary art
  • Ability to memorize information about each exhibition and discuss with viewers of all different interests and backgrounds
  • Maintain poise and professionalism under pressure and effectively communicate with a diverse range of people
  • Clear, precise, and professional communication skills a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent graduate, current student, or equivalent work experience with an arts or arts administration related major/focus
  • Previous experience with customer service, in a museum or gallery setting 

Pay: $18 per hour, eligible for paid overtime.
