ADULT TEDDY TRAGER – Age 18. A vivacious and independent rule-breaker. Loves to sing and dance and is ready to take life by storm. Soprano. Australian.

FRANK TRAGER – Age 45-50. Teddy’s father. Happy-go-lucky, baker by profession, full of wild stories and songs. Running from the truth, literally and figuratively. Baritone. Australian.

ANN TRAGER – [ROLE CAST] – Age 30-35. Teddy’s mother, leading the traditional life of a woman in the 1930s. Frustrated over the insecurities of her nomadic lifestyle and the family secret she must keep; struggles to keep some semblance of order in the household. Mezzo. Australian.

RAYMOND KEY – Age 30. American sailor in WWII, marries Teddy. Southern hospitality, serious about his responsibilities to his family. Baritone/tenor. Texan drawl.

MERLE TRAGER – Age 21. Teddy’s older sister. She is shy but tries hard to lead a proper life and keep Teddy from embarrassing her. Struggling with her family’s complex dynamics. Jitterbug/swing dancing. Australian.

MAMA KEY – Age 50. A small-town farming woman with a tough demeanor, but a big heart. Raymond, Clemmy, and Verna Mae’s mother. Mezzo. Texan drawl.

CLEMMY KEY – Age 16. Raymond’s brother, caught in an endless loop of teasing with his younger sister while also having a healthy amount of respect for his strict mother. Curious about girls, polite except when he accidentally isn’t. Texan drawl.

VERNA MAE KEY – Age 14. Your typical teenager with stars in her eyes. Yearning to hear about anywhere “other than Humble, Texas.”  Determined to become educated, swoons over boys; her favorite pastime is correcting her older brother. Texan drawl.

TOM/LOUIE/SAILOR 1 – Age 20s. American sailor, Doublecast as Teddy’s boyfriend. Australian.

JOEY/SAILOR 2 – Age 20s. American sailor. Timid, nostalgic, has Southern accent.

MRS. WIGGINS/SR.GERTRUDE – Age 70s. The Tragers’ meddlesome and hard-of-hearing next-door-neighbor. Also plays a nun caring for Frank Trager in a nursing home. Australian.

MR. VARRICK/CAPTAIN LAWTON – Age 40-60. American man, plays part of host of Varrick’s Variety Radio Show and Captain of the warship, The USS Butner, during WWII.

SYLVIA/WAR BRIDE 3 – Age 20s. A a war bride traveling to the USA on a troop ship across the Pacific during WWII; Teddy’s friend. Australian.

CLANCY/SAILOR 3 – Age 30-50. The friend of Frank Trager. Australian.

WAR BRIDE 1/MR. VARRICK’S ASSISTANT – Age 20-30. Plays war bride traveling to the USA on a warship who gets cold feet and runs off ship; also plays radio announcer’s assistant. Australian.

WAR BRIDE 2/SUSAN – Age 20-30. Clancy’s friend at wedding, also plays a war bride traveling to the USA on a troop ship across the Pacific during WWII. Australian.


YOUNG TEDDY TRAGER – Precocious, defiant, bubbly Australian girl age 8-10 who is determined to do something amazing in life! Soprano.

YOUNG MERLE TRAGER – Age 10-12. Australian woman, Teddy’s older sister. Shy, but tries hard to lead a proper life and keep Teddy from embarrassing her. Soprano.

KELLY – [ROLE CAST] – Age 8-10. American girl, spoken lines. Ensemble dancing and singing. 

FRANKIE – [ROLE CAST] – Age 8-10. American girl, spoken lines. Ensemble dancing and singing.

MARIE – Age 7-10. An American day care child, female. Spoken lines. Ensemble dancing and singing.

DUANE – Age 7-10. An American day care child, male. Spoken lines. Ensemble dancing and singing.

Please prepare 16-32 bars of a classical/golden age musical theatre song or jazz standard from the 1940s. Please bring a hard copy of a picture, resume, and sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. An invited dance call will take place the following day, July 28th.

Please note that the characters in this show are on the binary and written with she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.
