POSITION TITLE: Production Apprentice
REPORTS TO: Production Coordinator
CLASSIFICATION: Regular, Full-time mid August 2019 – mid June 2020, Non-Exempt
The Apprentice Program at New York Live Arts serves as an opportunity for those interested in the production side of movement-based performing arts, to gain strong hands-on technical skills in the field of production. Through immersion in the production environment, apprentices will experience technical and administrative aspects of presenting shows and running a theater. Schedules vary as per the needs of each production and are scheduled by the Production Coordinator. Hours will vary based on the season but average around 42 per week and can range anywhere from 20 – 70 hours per week (during peak festival times). The schedule changes according to our season calendar and there will be some weeks off. Apprentices will be notified two weeks out if there is an off week. Confirmed schedules will be received one week out. Apprentices are required to work on every season production and most rentals. Apprentices rotate through lighting, audio/video and deck roles from production to production, providing technical support for all organizational activities. Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn how to be a well rounded stagehand working as an electrician, light board operator, sound operator, deck audio, video operator and basic carpentry skills (soft goods, dance floor, minor construction). The goal of this opportunity is to train young professionals to be successful overhire stagehands and find their niche in technical theater. Additional opportunities for learning, shop visits, and visits to other theatres are also made available to apprentices. Outside work must first be approved in writing by the Production Coordinator. The more you engage in your on the job training, the larger the return. This apprenticeship provides a great framework to launch your technical career in New York City.
This is a full- time position with an hourly stipend. Workers Comp and Disability Coverage is also provided with the apprenticeship. There is no housing stipend; all applicants must be able to secure housing within commuting distance to New York City.
Serve as part of the load-in and load-out crew under the supervision of the LIVE ARTS Technical Director, Lighting Supervisor and Production Coordinator.
Serve as part of the run crew for all rentals and season productions. Responsibilities include but are not limited to Light Board Operator, Sound Operator, Deckhand, Video Operator or other tasks as assigned.
Actively engage in monthly meetings with Director of Production, Production Coordinator, Technical Director and Lighting Supervisor reviewing past productions and discussing upcoming productions.
Learn about LIVE ARTS policies, procedures and safety regulations.
Serve as part of the LIVE ARTS family in hosting visiting companies and rentals.
Promote a positive, respectful, inclusive and supportive work environment.
Work closely with the rest of the production department ( Production Coordinator, Technical Director and Lighting Supervisor) to maintain the high standards that New York Live Arts is known for throughout the community.
Interest in the production side of dance and the arts, especially in lighting, audio, video, and production management.
Self-motivated, hard working, team player who is eager to learn.
Minimal production/technical experience is required.
