Instructor of Theatre and Costume Designer

Position Summary

The Department of Performing Arts is seeking an Instructor of Performing Arts and Costume Designer for the 2019-2020 academic year. This position will teach Introduction to Theatre, Theatrical Design, Management Techniques and perhaps other courses. In addition, the position is responsible for the conception, design, and construction, of all costumes for the productions and projects of the department. The instructor and costume designer is a creative collaborator who teaches and mentors students who work closely with a multi-disciplinary academic and production team.

University of Detroit Mercy is located in a dynamic and growing area of Detroit and is central to a variety of cultural and recreational opportunities. Major productions are at theatre in downtown Detroit. The program and the University are committed to social justice and the surrounding community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Teaching and Advising Students – Teaches courses and provides a learning environment in an academic department of performing arts.

• Mentoring – Works closely with students and staff on projects while teaching and coaching new concepts, techniques and skills.

• Costume Design – Manages the conception, design and construction for all costumes for department productions and programs utilizing professional criteria as is standard in the field.

All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MFA in Theatre, preferably with a focus on costume design. Five to seven years’ experience designing clothing and or costumes, experience teaching at a university is strongly preferred. Must possess excellent communication and organizational skills, must be an independent self-motivated individual who is efficient, creative, and capable of teaching and leading others to accomplish the elements of each production.
