Breaking Into Acting With No Experience: Everything You Need to Know (Plus Submit Directly to Auditions)

Everybody wants to be an actor, but nobody really knows how to go about it… especially if you don’t have have any experience auditioning, attending casting calls, or even acting locally.

The tips below will help you prepare yourself for a career in acting, but it all starts with submitting yourself to auditions!

However, before I get to the tips, did you know that the following celebrities had almost NO experience? Use this as motivation:

  • Jennifer Lawrence
  • Channing Tatum
  • Charlize Theron
  • Matthew McConaughey
  • Evangeline Lilly
  • Johnny Depp
  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Mel Gibson
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar
  • Jason statham
  • Natalie Portman
  • Pamela Anderson

Some of these A – List Celebrities started with 0 experience, and today they are household names.

If you could go back in time, and tell them that they end up becoming some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood, can you imagine their reaction?

Tip 1: Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail

You need to have a plan – learn everything you can about the acting industry. How it works, etc. Read books, attend workshops, take part in your local theater, etc.

Tip 2: Take Part Locally

You may believe you need to up and move to California or New York to make your acting career take off, however that couldn’t be further from the truth. While there are certainly more opportunities in the big cities like LA and NYC, there are still plenty of opportunities in other parts of the states as well. In fact, you can very likely find opportunities nearby.

Tip 3: Audition, Audition and Audition some more

You know the saying… practice makes perfect.

Auditioning in a sense, is similar to interviewing for a job – think how nervous you were in your first job interview! By the time you got around to your 10th job interview it was just another walk in the park and you were much more comfortable and more like “your self”.

That’s how auditioning is.

It can be intimidating, but your ability to remain calm and control the situation will make for a better audition and the only want you get that level of confidence is experience.

Tip 4: Marketing & Networking Are Key:

Again, just like the job market, the “acting” market doesn’t knock on your door. You have to get up and let it know you’re there. The only way to do this is to network and market yourself.

In today’s age of social media and with how easy it is to build a website and have your portfolio online in just a couple of hours, there is literally no excuse to not be actively marketing yourself and networking with casting directors, other actors, etc.

Tip 5: Patience Grasshopper

The truth is, not even Kanye West could make you a celebrity overnight.

Like all good things in life, building an acting career from the ground up takes time, it takes patience, it takes hard work.

It comes with rejecting, but the ability to deal with the rejecting and keep moving forward are what will separate you from the actors that throw in the towel.
