Virginia Stage Company seeks a highly motivated, creative, and teamwork-driven professional to spread the word about the great work happening at VSC in the community. S/He will work in close partnership with the Director of Marketing and Managing Director to execute all marketing and public relations plans for the Virginia Stage mainstage season, education programs, and Public Works Virginia initiative, both in regards to execution and strategy. Additionally, the ideal will also assist in various ways, the overall development efforts of the company. This exciting position bridges both Marketing and Development and provides excellent experience for a beginning or mid-career individual looking to make a difference in the non-profit performing arts world. Listed below are the primary responsibilities, though the position is broader than just tasks and provides the opportunity to be strategic and creative.


About Virginia Stage Company

Virginia Stage Company (VSC) is a professional regional theater producing high-quality productions at the Historic Wells Theatre in downtown Norfolk, VA. With a $2.7 million annual budget, VSC produces seven mainstage productions every season in addition to numerous education & community engagement initiatives.  With an average annual attendance of 70,000 people, VSC has drawn over 3 million patrons to downtown Norfolk in the past quarter-century and is the leading theatre of note in southeastern Virginia.


Key Duties and Responsibilities 



Content Creation: Creating the first draft of blog posts, emails, and social media content.

Target Research: Identifying and researching potential groups, organizations, and constituencies that would be likely to be patrons of the theatre.

Event Promotion: Attending outside events to run a table and promote Virginia Stage Company.

Event Planning: Coordinate with restaurants and other partners as the primary organizer and point of contact for events such as opening night, LGBT night out, and young professionals events, among others. Assist with the planning and execution of season announcement and launch parties.

Proofreading: Reviewing and editing all written documents from the marketing department including press releases, emails, and print copy.

Social Media: Working with Graphic Designer developing content and implementing creative marketing strategies through new media.

Street Team: Organizing and leading a team of volunteers to put up posters, pass out flyers, and place street stickers around Norfolk and Greater Hampton Roads (some driving required).

Press Book Creation: Collecting all ads and articles, both print and online, and creating a comprehensive digital and hard copy set.

Deadline Tracking: Collaborate with Director of Marketing and Graphic Designer to diligently ensure collateral is created, proofed, and submitted on time. This requires maintaining and enforcing a rigid plan that involves tracking for many vendors over multiple media, along with other company departments.

Invoice and Trade Tracking: Keeping all marketing expenditures logged and submitted to the accounting department. Tracking and executing all trade agreements.




Target Research: Identify and research key stakeholders and leaders in Hampton Roads. Update and maintain Opening Night invite list.


Donor Database Management: Enter financial gifts and pledges, ensuring accurate donor/prospect information. Scan all document and checks associated with donations.

Donor Relations & Stewardship: Communicate and interact with donors/prospects via email, telephone, and in person at performances and donor and fundraising events. Assist in building new relationships and strengthening existing ones.

Appeals and Other Correspondence: Assist in the execution of annual appeals, sponsorship solicitation materials, and other prospective donor packets, among other correspondence.

Events: Assist the Development Manager on the planning, timeline, and overall fundraising event schedule for the company, in addition to liaising with all departments on event logistics and administration.

Strategic Planning: Participate in long-range strategic planning within department, with executive staff and Board of Trustees.



Qualifications & Experience


The M&D Assoc. must:


●       Possess excellent organizational, written/oral communication, and interpersonal skills

●       Demonstrated the desire and ability to work both in a group setting and individually

●       Display creative and strategic thinking


An ideal M&D Assoc. will:

●       Be able to manage deadlines and work successfully under pressure

●       Be flexible with a “hands-on” approach and a determination to get things done

●       Have a good sense of humor and want to be a key player in the advancement of the company

●       Be a steadfast ambassador out in the community, with the ability to thoughtfully promote our mission with passion, commitment, and persuasion

●       Have knowledge of Adobe suite, including Photoshop

●       Possess an artistic eye and passion for storytelling

●       Have experience with email marketing and social media software

●       Have experience with ticketing software such as Tessitura


This position will require the ability to work weekends and nights with regularity. A competitive salary and benefits package will be commensurate with skills and experience.
