The Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts at Queensborough Community College seeks a creative and collaborative faculty member for a full-time Assistant Professor position beginning with Fall 2019.  Candidate will perform teaching and related faculty function(s) in area of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, student mentorship, and other functions.

Candidate will teach introductory level courses in Theatre which may include: Stagecraft, Introduction to Theatre, and Practicum. Design sets for departmental season productions. Must attend all department/faculty meetings; oversee scheduling, staffing, and budgeting aspects of scenic design. Attend all technical rehearsals, previews, opening night performances, and strikes. Work with Technical Director in creation of production budgets and materials to purchase, attend all production meetings, attend load-in and lead all paint calls. As designer, collaborate with Production Manager, faculty directors and designers as well as supervise student-running crews on departmental productions. Night/weekend rehearsals and performances are required. Support students in participation in The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) and work with theatre faculty in recruitment and advisement.

In addition to teaching, responsibilities of the Scenic Designer at Queensborough Community College:

Attend design meetings as needed with director and fellow designers

Create renderings and scenic color model of design

Create drafting for technical director of design on or before final design deadline as indicated in the production calendar including (but not limited to) ground plans, elevations, sections and associated plates

Collaborate with production staff including technical director, assistant technical director, designers, technical students and director to execute the design of the set

Work with the QCC students in the Stagecraft and Practicum classes to execute the design of the set

Attend designer run as indicated in the season production calendar

Create shift plot in consultation with student stage manager, technical director, and director as needed

Serve as scenic painter for production

In conjunction with technical director, director, and student props master, assist in the design and acquisition of props and set dressing

Attends all production meetings as indicated in the season production calendar

Queensborough is a NAST accredited community college in the CUNY system located in Bayside, NY. Season productions will require designs for four productions in two different performance spaces, two main-stage (800 seat proscenium theater) and two studio (100 seat blackbox theater) shows. Designer should be comfortable working with introductory college students. Designer will act as scenic artist for shows.

Ph.D. degree in Theatre Arts or related area(s) of expertise OR

MFA in Scenic Design with equivalent professional experience


– College teaching experience in community college, and the ability to teach successfully at the college level

-Ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution

– Coursework in Stagecraft, Design and Practicum and knowledge of theories, practices and methodology of pedagogy

– Experience in developing and implementing course assessment

-An innovative perspective and non-traditional approach to pedagogy

-Experience teaching in a diverse environment
