Norma Desmond—Soprano to E, Alto-lyric belter – 50’s-60’s a beautiful but eccentric faded star of the silent screen era. Once the biggest name in Hollywood, she is a recluse in her decaying mansion. A woman of great pride and passion with hopes of a comeback. Must be able to negotiate difficult rhythms and melodies and have huge vocal chops as the show is almost sung-through; seeking star names.
Joe Gillis—High Baritone – 40s – a handsome but just past his prime screenwriter whose career is in decline. His playboy looks and manners used to open every door but things have changed. He moves in with Norma Desmond all the while falling in love with young Betty Schaefer; an absolute charmer with a dark side, strong legit/pop voice to an A.
Max von Mayerling—Baritone with Tenor range – 55-65 – Norma’s devoted butler, protects her from the outside world, a dark and ominous presence in the mansion, he was Norma’s director and first husband, dramatic baritone.
Betty Schaefer—Soprano to top A, belt to C – 21-25 – a beautiful young aspiring writer with spunk, teams up with Joe team up on a script and they fall in love, ultimately Joe breaks her heart, legit/pop soprano.
Artie Green—Tenor – 25-30 – Betty’s fiance, a self-described “Jewish Casanova,” a good-hearted guy, baritenor.
Cecil B DeMille—Baritone with Tenor range – 60-69 – the iconic Hollywood film director who discovered Norma Desmond and made her a star, historic figure, baritone.
Sheldrake/John—Baritone – 45-55 – a crass studio exec/film producer, also in the ensemble, baritone. Manfred/Myron—Tenor – 35-50 – a Beverly Hills men’s clothier, eager to please and a tad effete, also in the ensemble, tenor.

Rachel Marron – late 20’s early 30’s – is an Academy Award-nominated music superstar who is being stalked and sent death threats. She needs to sing in the style of Whitney Houston and move well. African American
Frank Farmer – 40-49 – a former C.I.A. agent, physically fit, lithe and athletic; sharp witted and instinctive; handsome and charismatic. He radiates a silent strength, an American alpha man type. Frank sings one song in a karaoke style. He need not be a major singer, just have the confidence to sing in front of a theatre audience.
Nicki Marron – late 30s – Rachel’s older sister, late 30’s; a very talented singer who has taken a back seat to her sisters rising star. Quiet type but attractive. Must be a very strong singer. Nicki must have a very soulful, gospel-tinged voice. She sings ballads in the show and so should have a warm resonance, excellent pitch and an ability to riff. Range from G below middle C to E at top of staff. African American
The Stalker – 20-39 – Rachel Marron’s stalker, military type, weird, outcast; should be able to sing comfortably in a tenor range; has one featured solo vocal line.
Sy Spector – 40-49 – Rachel’s publicist, deeply ambitious and doesn’t suffer fools or indeed anyone who isn’t doing exactly what he wants; bullish and quick. His belief is that the whole Oscar nomination for Rachel is because of his hard work and his alone! He believes he is her driving force.
