[NATHAN DETROIT] Male, age 35-55. The charming, but financially inadequate manager of the floating craps game in New York City. Engaged to Adelaide for 14 years, he is a neurotic but highly lovable friend to everyone – who is always just one step ahead of his debts – and promises to his longtime fiancé. Funny, frustrated but romantic his heart is torn between his gambling cronies and the woman he loves. Seeking excellent comic actor who can carry a tune and sell a song. Key to this is a warmth, optimism, comic sensibility and connection with the audience. Baritone to High F.
[ADELAIDE] Female, age 30s to 40s. The lead dancer at the ‘Hot Box’ – a mid-level cabaret burlesque house under Times Square, she is not always the brightest bulb on the tree but she has a huge heart. Deeply in love with Nathan, she has held onto the prospect of their engagement for 14 years. And she still believes it will happen. Her concerns over the length of their engagement have apparently caused her to develop a stress-induced cold, which emerges at select moments. Seeking excellent comic actress with very strong high belt voice to A. Would be ideal if actress was also a strong dancer (for comic effect.)
[SKY MASTERSON] Male, age 30s to 40s.The suave ‘Rat Pack’-like leading man, Sky Masterson is confident, cool, charismatic, smart, and charming. An inveterate gambler who naturally commands others’ respect and attention, he is handsome and accustomed to getting what he wants. When he meets Sarah Brown, he is thrown off by her strength and refusal to fall for his advances. Seeking very handsome, excellent actor with tremendous stage presence and power – and strong Sinatra-like singing voice. Baritone to E.
[SARAH BROWN] Female, age 20s to 30s. The highly conservative and staid missionary in charge of the Salvation Army Times Square branch (not an easy assignment), Sarah is strong in her convictions – and hopeful that she can make a difference in converting gamblers and gangsters of the area into clean living believers. Her cool response to Sky’s advances reveal the protective wall she has built around her heart. Eventually, her unexpected journey to Havana with Sky leaves her drunk with rum punch and, for the first time in a long time, love. Seeking excellent actress with humor, physicality, and an excellent Soprano singing voice to high A.
[NICELY NICELY JOHNSON] Male, age 30s to early 50s. Nathan’s close friend, Nicely is everybody’s pal. A good-natured optimist who likes to be liked, he likes food even more – and has the large frame to prove it. Always upbeat and enthusiastic, he delivers the most stirring testimony in the penultimate mission scene – in the form of the huge Broadway showstopper – ‘Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat.’ Seeking large actor with excellent spirit and comic timing – and a big rousing Broadway tenor voice – sings to high B flat. He is a helium filled balloon filled with bubbly energy and a naïve buoyant optimism and excitement with the world.
[ARVIDE ABERNATHY] Male, age 60 – 80. Sarah’s grandfather and significant member of the Salvation Army mission. Wise, warm and caring. Radiates warmth and perhaps a little bit of mischievous humor. He wants to see Sarah happy. Baritone. Scottish dialect
[BENNY SOUTHSTREET] Male, age 30s – 50s. Nicely’s buddy and complementary half of the duo, Benny is physically the opposite of Nicely (the Timon to Nicely’s Pumba) – but spiritually in sync. He’s a good guy with a pressing desire to help Nathan succeed and an impish charm. One of the gang of three that opens the show with ‘Fugue For Tinhorns’ and the vaudevillian title number, Benny is energetic, wiry, and often a bit nervous. Seeking excellent comic character actor/singer/mover who delights in performing. A physical comedian with great vaudevillian sensibility and likability.
[BIG JULE] Male, age 30s – 50s. His name says it all. Big Jule is BIG – much taller than anyone else on the stage; he is man of few words, used to getting his way through visual intimidation. He is from Chicago and speaks with a thick Chicago accent in threatening grunts of broken gangster speak. He does not like to lose. Seeking excellent comic actor who is at least 6’ 4” tall. Role does not necessarily need to sing or dance.
[GENERAL MATILDA B. CARTWRIGHT] Female, age 50s – 60s. The matronly and imperious representative of the Salvation Army, she shows up to check in on Sarah and close her mission branch. She is strict, stern and no-nonsense. Until she breaks loose with a wild streak, singing and dancing in a stunningly joyous vocal solo in ‘Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat.’ Seeking very strong actress with sense of humor and unexpected great vocal ability – open to various vocal ideas from soprano to high belt to scat to Louis Armstrong. Vocal range can be tailored to the actress’ strength. Great cameo.
[LT. BRANNIGAN] Male, age late 30s – 50s. Hard-boiled New York cop right out of a B movie. He is wise to the crap game and the gangsters that surround him on Broadway, and he is a constant threat to their freedom. Commands respect from Nathan and the guys. Seeking strong actor with strong, tough presence. Role does not need to sing.
[HARRY THE HORSE] Male, age 30s – 50s. Another gangster, he has come into money by collecting the reward on his father. He is a wild character of this unique underworld. Sidekick and mouthpiece to Big Jule, so, though a pleasant rogue, is more on the ball and can be a cool customer who is able to stand his ground when necessary. Sings with ensemble. Seeking great character actor with unique and fun gangster sensibility
NOTE: For Guys and Dolls, All characters exist in the Damon Runyon world of 1950 New York City gangsters and showgirls, with the oddball humor, vivid language, and heart that implies. All actors should prepare New York dialect (except Big Jule, who should prepare Chicago dialect) and embrace the sense of humor, style – and humanity that drives it. For examples of style, actors can reference Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason on the ‘Honeymooners’ etc.

[LOLA/SIMON] Male, early 30s, African-American. A strong comedic cross-dresser who needs to feel comfortable wearing everything from full glamour drag to nothing but boxing trunks. Must have a killer voice with power blues and gospel chops. Must move very well. Must have star presence for this very challenging role.
[NICOLA] Female, 20s, Caucasian. Charlie’s girlfriend since school. Steel willed, she is driven and uncompromising. She knows what she wants and goes for it. Must have a great pop rock voice with a strong belt.
[LAUREN] Female, 20s, Caucasian. Beautiful working class girl, who is smart, practical and focused, but has had bad luck with men. Must have a strong pop rock voice with belt.
[DON] Male, 30s – 40s, Caucasian. Lola’s nemesis. Burly hyper-masculine bear of a factory worker. Should have a strong baritone voice.
[GEORGE] Male, 40s-50s, Caucasian. Factory manager keeping up traditions. Reserved. Should have a strong baritone voice.

[BENJAMIN FRANKLIN] Male, 60 to 70. Delegate from Pennsylvania. Franklin is intelligent, well traveled, and pleasantly cunning. A jolly and admirable fellow with whom one would desire to have a friendship. Vocal range: Ab2 to Eb4
[RICHARD HENRY LEE] Male, 45. Delegate from Virginia, Lee is a willowy aristocrat. His flamboyance is intoxicating and borderline infuriating. Vocal range: C3 to G4
[JOHN DICKINSON] Male, 44. Delegate from Pennsylvania. A thin, hawkish gentleman. He is sharp- tongued and a touch detestable. Vocal range: A2 to E4
[EDWARD RUTLEDGE] Male, 26. Delegate from South Carolina. Despite his good looks, Rutledge is haunting and somewhat ominous as the youngest member of the Continental Congress. There is a serpent-like quality to him. Vocal range: C3 to A4
[ABIGAIL ADAMS] Female, 32. Loving wife to John Adams. Intelligent, quick-witted, and talented with a pen, Abigail is a radiant beauty. Every bit as bright as her husband. Vocal range: Db4 to F5
[MARTHA JEFFERSON] Female, 27. Thomas Jefferson’s very-much-in-love wife. Her looks are striking, her dancing delightful, and her humor appealing. She doesn’t shy away from a good time. Joy radiates from her. Vocal range: Bb3 to D5
[STEPHEN HOPKINS] Male, 70. Delegate from Rhode Island. Hopkins’ drinking has led to an appearance befitting of the 2nd oldest in the Continental Congress. He has a dirty old man playfulness about him. Vocal range: C3 to Eb4
[ROGER SHERMAN] Male, 55. Delegate from Connecticut. A coffee drinker with a penchant for hyperactivity, Sherman is a simple and balding cobbler. Vocal range: C3 to Bb4.
[ROBERT LIVINGSTON] Male, 30. Delegate from New York. Recently a father, Livingston’s disposition has become one of humility and graciousness. He has changed considerably over the years. Vocal range: Bb2 to F4
[COL. THOMAS MCKEAN] Male, 42. Delegate from Delaware. McKean is florid and likable with a charming, yet commanding, Scottish Brogue. Vocal range: C3 to Eb4

Idealistic and hopeful, she courageously challenges the prince to change the policies in his kingdom–and helps him discover who he truly is. Always her late father’s daughter, she is determined to see the good in everyone despite her hardships and suffering. We see her blossom into a confident woman. An elegant dancer, she must have strong dance and partnering skills and great comedic timing. Beautiful and expressive traditional musical theater soprano.
[PRINCE TOPHER] Male, age 20-39. Misguided and lost prince who longs to do something important with his life. Though brave and heroic, he feels lonely and unfulfilled. Charming but not a stereotypical ladies man, he is thoughtful, appealing, and innocent–with an unforced goofy streak. Moral, genuine, and kindhearted, he is at a crossroads and must take control of his kingdom and his future. Must have strong dance and partnering skills and great comedic timing. [MADAME] Female, age 40-69. Ella’s selfish stepmother. The epitome of vanity and fashion. A ravenous social climber who values wealth, status, and material possessions above all else. Unapologetically dismissive and sometimes cruel, Madame schemes her way up the social ladder. Must have incredible comic timing. Traditional musical theater character voice.
[SEBASTIAN] Male, age 40-65. The kingdom’s Lord Chancellor. Though he is Topher’s trusted advisor, he is devious and selfish. Using propaganda and dishonesty, he keeps Topher isolated and in the dark about his kingdom. Sebastian rules without regard for the lower class, or anyone other than himself – and truly believe he deserves to rule the kingdom. Must have incredible comic timing. Traditional musical theater character voice.
[MARIE] Female, age 40-69. A friend to Ella and the town’s resident crazy lady and beggar woman, Marie is actually a fairy godmother in disguise. Wise, warm, otherworldly and charming. Marie rewards Ella for her kindness by making her dreams a possibility. Comic timing is essential. Glorious and expressive traditional musical theater soprano to a G.
[GABRIELLE] Female, age 20-39. Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Encouraged by her mother and sister to value material wealth and social status, she unenthusiastically joins them in their abrasive behavior. Quietly passionate, empathetic, and witty, she is drawn to Ella and Jean-Michel. Ironically aware that she doesn’t fit in. Must have great comic timing. Strong and expressive traditional musical theater voice.
[JEAN-MICHEL] Female, age 20-39. Feisty, passionate peasant determined to make a change for the starving class. Impetuous. A firebrand, but lacks authority and isn’t taken seriously as a revolutionary. Has a crush on Gabrielle, though their courtship is forbidden because they are from different social classes. Interested in all physical type she could be scrawny, short, tall, chubby, etc. Must have great comic timing. Traditional musical theater voice with an attractive, compelling sound.
[CHARLOTTE] Female, age 20-39. Character gal-Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Brash, self-centered, materialistic, snooty, loud, sassy, and bratty, she has a ridiculously high, but unfounded opinion of herself. She never passes up an opportunity to be the center of attention. Must have great comic timing. Strong and expressive traditional musical theater character belt to an F.
[LORD PINKLETON] Male, age 30-59. The Lord Chancellor’s right-hand man. Announces royal balls, banquets, and even the weather to the villagers. Must have great comic timing. Vocal description: Strong traditional musical theater tenor to an A with power.

[REN MCCORMACK] Male, teenager. A fun-loving teenager from Chicago who moves to the small town of Bomont. Quick-witted, out-going, and a natural leader; but his happy-go-lucky attitude masks his anguish over the recent departure of his father. He loves to dance and bristles at his new town’s ban on the activity, eventually taking a stand to lift the ban. A true triple threat with a thrilling pop-rock tenor voice.
[ARIEL MOORE] Female, teenager. The rebellious daughter of Reverend Moore. Her defiance covers the pain she still feels over the untimely death of her brother and the. She eventually opens up to Ren and falls for him. A true triple threat with an outstanding pop-rock belt/mezzo voice.
[ETHEL MCCORMACK] Female, 40s-50s. Ren’s mother. She is intelligent, resilient and humorous. Ethel has to be strong for Ren due to their mutual loss (when her husband/his father left them), which has brought them closer together. They share a teasing, good-natured relationship. Strong actor with a great pop-rock mezzo voice.
[REVEREND SHAW MOORE] Male, 40s-50s. The minister of Bomont and Ariel’s father. The conservative authority figure in town that outlaws dancing. Charismatic and charming; worries frequently about his impulsive but precious daughter. The combination of that and mourning the loss of his son is causing issues in his marriage. While trying to be strong for so many people, he continues to mourn the death of his son, the one person he could not save. Strong actor with a great pop-rock Baritone voice.
[VI MOORE] Female, 40s-50s. Ariel’s mother and Shaw’s wife. Strong, resilient and proud. Despite the loss of her son and the strained relationship with Shaw, Vi understands what kind of good humor she must display in order to keep her household and her husband’s congregation running smoothly. Strong actor with a great pop-rock mezzo voice.
[LULU WARNICKER] Female, 40s-50s. Ren’s aunt and Ethel’s sister. Strong actor with a good pop- rock alto voice.
[WES WARNICKER] Male, 40s-50s. Lulu’s husband. Strong actor with a good pop-rock voice. [COACH DUNBAR/SALOON QUARTET] Male, 40s-50s. Bomont High School’s gym teacher. Doubles in a featured singing role. Strong pop-rock voice.

[WILLARD HEWITT] Male, teenager. A country boy. A bit slow-witted with a quick temper and an unwavering loyalty to his mother. Must be a true triple threat with great comic timing and a strong pop- rock Baritone voice.

[BEN RUMSON] Male, age 40-50s. A seemingly amiable affable, gregarious and liberal (for his time) Southerner. Devastated after his wife’s death, this brilliant, bereaved and now bitter man retreats from the world and travels west, determined to keep to himself. However, much to his annoyance, his strong sense of right and wrong forces him to speak up and act whenever he sees an injustice. He must deal with the consequences of his own secret greed and bad decisions.
[ARMANDO] Male, age 20s. A “californio” (Latino) who came from a well-to-do, well-educated Mexican farming family who were killed when prospectors and looters took their land from them. Armando is now an arriero – someone who delivers the mail from town to town on his mule. It’s been a lonely existence for a young man of twenty until he his befriended – begrudgingly — by Ben Rumson and his daughter Jennifer.
[CAYLA] Female, age 30-40s. Pushed down by life – and by her husband. Must calculate the best way to survive in a country where she has no rights of her own. Cares deeply for Ben and is responsible for creating a new kind of family for herself and others.
[JENNIFER RUMSON] Female. Ben’s 19 year-old daughter. She has no problem taking control or speaking up. Can be a bit too serious at times. After losing her mother, she is determined to piece her family back together.
[WILLIAM] Male, 20s. Irish, warm, a little too easy-going about life. Responsible for his family he left back home. Loses his way in the new world.
[EMILY] Female, 20s. William’s wife. She is forced to be the anchor of the family, but has a sense of humor about it
[CRAIG] Male, 30s-40s. Cayla’s husband. A petty man and a petty tyrant.
[MING-LI] Male, 20s. Chinese. The older brother of Guang-Li. Proud of his culture. Desperate to earn money quickly and return to China.
[GUANG-LI] Male, 20s. The social and idiosyncratic younger brother of Ming-Li. Wants to experience America and the people.
[WESLEY] Male, 20s. A slave owned by his half brother Jake. Has a sly sense of humor. Ready for a new life. Is a born survivor.
[JAKE] Male, 20s. A privileged white southerner who runs the tavern. He is driven to make money & succeed. Has one Achilles heel – his half brother, and slave, Wesley.
[H FORD] Male, 20s-30s. Strong-willed, has no problem voicing his opinions, African-American Northerner – was born and continues to be a free

[MISS JENNIFER HONEY] Female, age 30s-40s. Soprano, adored by every child in her care, secretly Miss Trunchbull’s niece.
[MR. WORMWOOD] Male, age 30s-40s. Baritenor, dealer in second hand cars, a crook.
[MRS. WORMWOOD] Female, age 30s-40s. Alto High Belt, mother of Michael and Matilda, obsessed with amateur ballroom dancing.
